Surfers, take note: a sweet spot overlooking one of New Zealand's best surf beaches is up for grabs.

More than 22ha of bare land next to Whareakeake Beach, in Otago, is for sale by deadline private treaty, closing on August 18.

The beach, also known as Murdering Beach after a deadly skirmish in 1817, is exposed to southern swells, which provides one of the country's best right-hand point breaks.

Bayleys sales agent Kees Meeuws, who is marketing the property, describes it as a "stunning Taonga (treasure) on Dunedin's backdoor step".

He says the property, currently leased to a local farmer for grazing, has attracted a lot of international attention since coming onto the market.

"I've had enquiries from the US, the UK, Singapore, Germany and the Netherlands," he says.

"You rarely come across a surfing spot like this - it's really special, and it's not crowded. To have a surf break like this on your doorstep - wow!"

Meeuws says he promoted the listing through NZ Surfing Magazine and the interest from surfers had been phenomenal. "We've had 55,000 people looking at it."

OneRoof records show the land last changed hands in August 2015 for $365,000 and has a rating valuation of $487,000.
