When John Sperry received an email to let him know he was a winner in OneRoof’s You Win A Car draw for a brand new Suzuki Swift, he thought there must have been some kind of mistake, but a quick phone call to OneRoof confirmed that it was genuine.

“My partner and I had both entered, but I was the lucky one,” he laughed. “Perhaps I’ll let her sit in the passenger seat!”

John, who was one of thousands of entrants to OneRoof’s car contest which launched this month, said he’s never won a major prize before.

“Just a few chooks down at the pub, really.”

OneRoof has one more 2024 Suzuki Swift GLS Hybrid Autos to give away, with the third winner to be drawn on Monday.

The long-time New Plymouth resident said that like most New Zealanders, he was fascinated by the property market and all of its twists and turns.

“I think it’s ingrained in us to want to own our quarter acre paradise, and I use OneRoof to keep up to date with what’s happening here.”

Taranaki sale prices rose by 6.1% in the year to July, according to REINZ’s latest figures, and it was the only region in the country to see listings decrease – they were down by 4.8%.

John bought his own home, which overlooks the harbour, around 12 years ago.

“It’s an older place but it really appealed to me because it has an enormous basement where I like to tinker with old cars and motorbikes,” he said.

“The only problem is that with more space you collect more junk. I’ve got a 1991 MX5 sports car that I’m rather attached to, but I think I’ll probably end up selling it now to make room for the new Swift.”

2024 Suzuki Swift

John Sperry, a long-time New Plymouth resident, initially thought it was a mistake until a call to OneRoof confirmed that he had indeed won a Suzuki Swift in OneRoof’s You Win A Car competition.

He has already been in touch with the local dealership and chose pearl white for his prize car.

“It won’t show the dirt, and I think white cars are safer because they’re easy to see on the road.”

John said that the next step in his property journey was likely to be a move to a retirement village.

“They say that you shouldn’t leave it too late because those places are so much fun, so I want to go while I can still enjoy it!”

For now, though, John is excitedly awaiting delivery of his Suzuki Swift and looking forward to taking it for a spin around Taranaki’s many scenic roads.
