Eighteen years ago, David and his wife Christina were living three doors down and not actively house-hunting when a real estate agent friend suggested that they should take a look at his new listing.
Just two steps over the threshold, standing in the spacious atrium entrance, David knew that he was going to buy the house.
“It had a ‘mansion-like’ feel that I really appreciated and it’s absolutely park-side, with our own private entry, which was great for us because our son was a baby at the time,” he says.
The couple went on to completely refurbish the Mediterranean-style executive home – designed by renowned architect Peter Sargisson, and originally built by a builder, for his own family, using nothing but the highest quality materials.

These include rare ‘hybrid’ joinery, which is high quality timber on the inside and durable aluminium powder-coated joinery on the exterior and a stunning parquet floor.
With interior design expert Gretl Lukas’s assistance, they created the ultimate chef’s kitchen with handsome joinery and high-end appliances. Separate dining, living and family rooms allow for rest and relaxation as well as entertaining. The home enjoys a custom-built office or, alternatively, a gym, as well as a separate laundry.
Five generous bedrooms – three with expansive park views, are served by three five-star hotel level bathrooms, including the spectacular Versace custom ensuite.
“It’s the Ferrari of cabinetry,” says David, “with custom Versace tiles, holders, fixtures and 24K gold-plated faucets.”
With under-floor ducted central heating and cooling system plus air conditioning heat pump, the house is cool in summer and warm in winter.
108 Wheturangi Road, in Greenlane, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on October 2. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom property has a 2021 CV of $3.15 million and, according to OneRoof data, last changed hands in 2006 for $1.78m.
David and Christina are fans of statement lighting and sourced a number of European fittings from ECC in Mount Eden, as well as a Murano glass chandelier in the master bedroom. The living areas are surrounded by extensive patio spaces, with pergolas and partial shelter – all conducive to al fresco dining in summer.
The garden was designed by Xanthe White and features lush subtropical plantings which look stunning, yet are remarkably easy to care for, and the palms are all very well-established.
Families will appreciate the professionally constructed 3-hole putting green, and life-like Tiger Turf means there’s no need for a lawnmower.
David says that the property is just “10 minutes from practically anywhere”. Motorway access is right nearby, Newmarket and Parnell are a short drive and there are four supermarkets in the vicinity. Public transport is also regular and reliable.
David is soon to retire from his career in environmental planning and he and Christina feel the time has come to downsize their living arrangements. This presents an opportunity for new owners to enjoy their executive residence, which has been meticulously prepared for sale.
Ian Thornhill and Ray Chan, from Barfoot & Thompson, are marketing 108 Wheturangi Road.
“This is a very rare opportunity to buy a property of such a high calibre, bordering on Cornwall Park. While it’s a large home, it’s got unique balance of being a comfortable and cosy family haven. It’s been the perfect spot for David and his family and will no doubt be the same for the next lucky owner.”
