The biggest deal-breaker for renters living in a share house is loud sex, according to a new Australian survey.

Respondents said that rowdy bedroom antics were more annoying than unpaid rent.

Of the 18 to 35-year-old Australian renters surveyed by realestate.com.au and Pedestrian.TV, 30.9 percent live with three or four housemates.

The most expensive rental markets naturally attracted more share house-living situations, particularly in the ACT, NSW and Tasmania.

Untidiness was the number one cause of stress levels for housemates, with 33.2 percent of respondents calling it their top pet peeve – along with a lack of stacking of the dishwasher.

Unsurprisingly, with such potential for tension, 39.7 percent of renters have lost a friendship from living together. But it’s not all doom and gloom – 14 percent of respondents said they had started a relationship with a roommate.

The survey found that the average Australian renter is predominately female, aged 25-29, with an annual income of A$50,000. They mainly live in Sydney (32.8 percent) and Melbourne (31.1 percent).
