Curvy dome-shaped architecture is common for Greece or the sunny climates that edge the Med, but is a head-turner for Kiwi beach settings.

This summer, we found two dome houses on sale. One on Auckland's Waiheke Island and the other on Wellington's Kapiti Coast, they look as if they will transport you to the sci-fi beach of the future.

On Waiheke, the four-bedroom and two-bathroom Sea View Rd dome is just two streets away from Onetangi, the island’s biggest beach.

The four-bedroom and two bathroom dome sitting on 812 sq m of land on Sea View Rd has a CV of $830,000. Photo / Supplied.

With its white-washed walls, stone floors, blue doors and windowsills it is inspired by the architecture of the sunny Greek Islands.

Ray White agents marketing the property Harry Howe and Helen Smith say the house makes an outstanding holiday rental with the layout allowing two separate units with bathrooms to be rented to holidaymakers.

"The current owners plan to travel to places like Santorini in the Greek Islands where the original inspiration for this home came from," Howe says.

The beach-front dome for sale on the Kapiti Coast has a more artistic finish that makes it look like a set of Star Wars landed in Wellington.

The sci-fi property, designed by Austrian architect Fritz Eisenhofer in 2012, is built with ferro cement, which keeps it cool in summer, and warm in winter. It’s economical to run due to being also solar powered.
