Two significant sheep and beef farms in the East Coast region of the North Island have been placed on the market for sale.

Situated on the East Cape, the 1,816-hectare Matahiia Staton at Matahiia Road, Raukumara, and the 595-hectare Katoa Station in Whakaangiangi Road, Te Araroa are two of the most impressive farming operations.

Matahiia Staton presently winters 14,500 sheep and cattle stock units, while Katoa Station has a current stock carrying capacity of 10.5 stock units per effective hectare – totalling 4,475 stock units.

Both Matahiia Station and Katoa Station are being individually marketed for sale by tender through Bayleys Gisborne, with the tender processes for each of the two properties closing on November 23. Salespeople Simon Bousfield and Stephen Thomson said the two properties represented two different opportunities based on their size.

“Matahiia Station presents significant scale - encompassing strong hill country, extensive alluvial flats, and easy contoured, cultivatable land. The farm’s attractive contour is supported by impeccable infrastructure,” said Bousfield.

“Well subdivided by a network of laneways connecting satellite yards, access across the property often extends across all-weather metalled tracks. The property benefits from an extensive supply of stock water, which includes a wide-reaching reticulated stock water system, while the location has an annual rainfall of approximately 1,200mm - 1,300mm, and mild winters.

“An extensive reticulated water system is fed by freshwater springs in the upper-central portion of the farm. Utilising main feed lines and break tanks, the fresh water is reticulated throughout hill country paddocks and down to the flats. Additional to the reticulated water, a network of good dams for stock water extend across the farm.”

Farm building infrastructure on Matahiia Station consists of:

• Two large four-stand woolsheds, with extensive covered yard night pen capacity, one with an adjoining modern ablution complex incorporating showers and toilets for farm staff.
• Comprehensive sheep and cattle yards, with load-out
• Multiple implement sheds in different sizes and configurations ranging in scale from a two-bay structure up to a high-stud five-bay implement shed on a concrete pad with staff lunchroom room with cooking facilities
• An extensive network of satellite yards featuring both sheep and cattle handling facilities strategically located across the station
and
• A substantial killing house facility equipped with chillers and processing equipment.

Matahiia Station has eight residential dwellings spread over the property. The farm’s portfolio of homes includes:
• The main homestead consisting of a refurbished five-bedroom/three bathroom/two living rooms residence with an additional sleepout
• A second homestead consisting of a six-bedroom/two lounge premises • Five separate three-bedroom homes
and
• A one-bedroom guest cottage with its own kitchen and bathroom facilities located beside the main woolshed.

“This is a high-performing East Coast station, offering a superb combination of strong, sheltered breeding country, and finishing land, rarely presented to market,” said Bousfield.

Meanwhile, Bousfield and Thompson said nearby Katoa Station presented an opportunity to acquire a high performing finishing property comprising a very appealing mix of farm contour - consisting of extensive flat to easy country across the effective area of the farm, which is estimated to be approximately 160-hectares of flat and cultivable land.

“There is excellent access to front portion of the farm, the farm’s Whakaangiangi Road frontage extends almost four kilometres through the front of the farm flats, and this provides excellent access and workability.

“The location also enjoys an excellent farming climate, with very healthy annual rainfall. In recent years, annual rainfall has been assessed at between 2,300mm - 2,400mm per annum. In addition, stock water reticulation throughout the flats is sourced from a bore to the northern end of the
property. Dams are also located around the farm for additional stock water.”

Katoa Station is intensively subdivided into 70 paddocks located between 80-250 metres above sea level. Farm building infrastructure on the property consists of:
• A very tidy and extensive four-stand woolshed, with approximately 1,800 covered yard night-pen capacity
• A large seven-bay implement shed, with two secure enclosed bays and a sheltered fuelling station
and
• An airstrip and fertiliser bin at the northern end of the farm.

Residential accommodation dwellings on the farm consist of two homes built in 2008. The main five-bedroom/two-living area/two-bathroom homestead was built in an open plan format. The second home is a three-bedroom Lockwood style residence.
