The current owner and his family bought this dreamy Oratia hideaway between lockdowns, in 2020, and he says that they simply could not imagine a more perfect home to have been confined to barracks in with their two young children, who were able to take full advantage of the swimming pool, playground and lawn.

181 Shaw Road in Oratia, Waitakere, is on the market for sale by auction on October 29. The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home has an RV of $1.95 million and, according to OneRoof data, last sold in June 2020 for $1.78m.

The brick house, which has an iron roof, was built on its spacious 3577sqm site – surrounded by native bush, in the 1990s, and has been meticulously upkept and maintained since then. It sits on a ridge, enjoying all-day sun and stunning views of Auckland.

“Although we weren’t here for long, we did manage to add an extra bedroom upstairs,” says the owner.

He and his partner were attracted to the property by the incredible sense of space it inspires and the large open-plan kitchen, living and dining areas which aren’t always common features in the United Kingdom, where they come from.

They loved the huge windows and the floor-to-ceiling feature brick fireplace, for winter warmth and comfort, while the four sets of French doors opening to the deck and patio mean that exterior parts of the property are easy to access in summer, with excellent flow.

Also on the ground floor are two bedrooms, a separate laundry and two bathrooms, so everybody has plenty of space.

The new bedroom upstairs is in addition to the master suite, which has its own bathroom and there’s also a lounge up here – all of which adds up to being an extremely generous size in terms of the house – but wait, there’s more.

A two-level, one-bedroom minor dwelling on the property was built to complement the main house – in style and charm – and the current owners intended it to be used by his mother, but she decided she’d rather be in a house with her family. They have since found a new property which is better suited to that living arrangement, hence the sale.

The cottage could be rented out if a new owner wished – for around $500 per week.

“We have absolutely loved it here,” says the owner. “The community in general has been very welcoming, and this is such a happy little place, with a friendly, country school.”

He adds that two sets of neighbours are now close friends, and people in the street tend to keep an eye out for one another.

As a frequent traveller for work, he has also appreciated the easy, straightforward access to Auckland Airport – a journey that takes around 30 minutes.

Craig Smith of Ray White, Titirangi sold this special property to the current owner in 2020 and is pleased to be marketing it again with his dynamic team who have 50 years of combined real estate experience between them, and an in-depth knowledge and love of this very popular corner of Auckland.
