Whitianga in Mercury Bay is one of the Coromandel’s most perennially popular spots – particularly amongst Aucklanders and residents of other major upper North Island hubs.

They regard the town and its surrounds as the ideal spot for a weekend getaway – or later in life, a more permanent location for peace and recreation, with plenty of options to find the right pace and level of activity for the day.

With the main road having recently reopened, Whitianga is an easy two-and-a-half hours’, or so, drive from Auckland. Many pastimes in the area centre around the sea with boating, fishing and other water-based sports and activities on offer as well as biking and hiking trails, on land.

Well-known local attractions including Cathedral Cove and world-famous Hot Water Beach are only a short distance away, as are boutique wineries, Mercury Bay Museum, The Lost Spring hot springs and Whiti Farm Park.

With 6000 permanent residents, many of whom have moved there to take advantage of the working from home trend since the pandemic lockdowns, Whitianga is also home to many families and enjoys a wide range of community services and facilities including shops and cafes.

Hopper Developments began a large-scale canal development project in the late 1990s creating Whitianga’s picturesque waterways in the late 1990s and have established a carefully planned community at Marlin Waters with an emphasis on quality homes and fun-filled lifestyles.

Waterfront villas are especially sought-after, while those on dry sections still enjoy easy access to beaches and reserves. Residents appreciate access to a unique floating clubhouse, private boat ramp and their own beach.

Retail offerings at the recently opened ‘Dockside’ are currently coming on stream and include a new waterfront café: Basker Café.

Hopper Developments sales and marketing manager Shana Hopper McCully says that residents are able to easily take off for a day’s fishing or enjoy swimming, boating and kayaking closer to home.

The Marlin Waters villas have been solidly constructed with care around form and function. They feature light-filled designer interiors and only the best available materials have been used throughout. Indoor outdoor flow has been a design priority as Hoppers knows that residents love to entertain family and friends.

Two unique, brand-new, north-west facing, freehold title waterfront homes are currently for sale at Marlin Waters. Each has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large entertainer’s kitchen, complete with butler’s pantry.

The open-plan kitchen dining and living area fronts directly onto the waterways and both are fully landscaped, with internal access garages.

The two homes come furnished, with tasteful, stylish materials – and furniture chosen by top interior designers. One villa also has the option of a private jetty.

John Greenwood, from Bayleys, says that these last fantastic homes in Marlin Waters offer the chance for buyers to become part of a vibrant community, at an ultra-affordable price.

“The two 171sqm homes have the same floor plan and are expected to sell at auction upwards of only $1.6 million, which is far less than you would pay at other comparable waterfront communities.”
