The current owner of this meticulously renovated and updated 1910s character transitional villa, on a leafy Mount Eden Street, says that he and his wife barely needed to lift a finger after purchasing the property in 2013.

“Everything had already been done – to the highest standard,” he says.

“And over the years we’ve simply repainted it and looked after the garden, plus other small things here and there.”

The home has a very relaxed and easy flow with big, bright sunny rooms. There are three bedrooms to the left of the front door, one of which has an ensuite, while across the hallway lies an office, another bathroom, and an enormous master bedroom with built-in wardrobes.

The kitchen, dining and living zone at the rear of the house is spacious and open plan with doors opening to the patio, pool and spa.

The owner says that his own father had lived in nearby Kelly Street, before leaving for WWII, so he’s always felt a real connection to the Eden-Epsom area, and he and his wife have found Owens Road an especially convenient spot.

It’s about three minutes’ walk away from Mount Eden Village, and their favourite Frasers Café, while in the other direction lies one of Auckland’s best-kept secrets – the glorious Eden Garden with its uphill, downhill trails and seasonal displays of spectacular flowers and trees.

There’s a bus lane to the city on Mount Eden Road and motorway access on Gillies Avenue. It’s easy to get to the airport and the property is zoned for great schools, with Auckland Grammar and Epsom Girls Grammar just a short stroll away.

“We loved it from the first minute. In fact, my wife and I always say ‘We love you, home’, whenever we walk in. It has a special spirit – and we’re sure that only nice people have ever lived here.”

He adds that everyone admires the wide hall, and all the rooms have lead-light windows.

“We had a man here to hang some blinds and he was reluctant to do it because the windows are so lovely, but we needed to protect our furniture from the sun.”

He says it’s going to be hard to leave this much-loved property with its excellent indoor-outdoor flow.

“We’ve had 60th birthdays with dozens of people and live music, and our neighbours are great. But life moves on and it’s time for us to downsize. As you get older you need to simplify your life.

“My wife and I think it would be nice for a new family to come along and enjoy the pool and all the space this place offers.”

Agent VK Patel, from Barfoot & Thompson, Mount Roskill says that the people who originally built it, early last century, obviously put some money into special features – including 17 or 18 leadlights – and the pressed steel ceilings, which still look lovely today.

VK says that the property is in a single house zone and it’s all ready and waiting for a new era to begin.

88 Owens Road in Epsom, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on March 26.
