When you’re looking for an unforgettable afternoon wining and dining experience, you can’t go past TripAdvisor’s number one Waiheke restaurant recommendation five years’ running: Tantalus Estate.
Now, you could be the proud owner of the world-class winery, restaurant, brewery, and event venue all rolled into one exclusive property at 70-72 Onetangi Road in Onetangi.
Over the last decade, Bruce Aitken and his family have reshaped Tantalus Estate from a ramshackle, in-much-need-of-love property into a world-class wining and dining establishment.
Positioned in the heart of Onetangi’s famed strip of vineyards, Tantalus consistently ranks at the top of punters’ favourite places to visit on Waiheke – and you can see why. Bruce says he and his family are supremely proud of the work they’ve put in to transform Tantalus into what it is today.

“When we first laid eyes on the property, we could only see potential,” he recalls.
“It was run-down, worse for wear, and crying out for a lot of love. We originally wanted to build a craft brewery but after we purchased the property, we realised there was a lot more scope to develop the existing winery, restaurant, and brewery.”
When you look at what’s on the site now, it’s hard to imagine what these 20 acres looked like in 2013 when Bruce and his family purchased the property.
Today, Tantalus Estate is home to a state-of-the-art winery that produces exceptional Bordeaux- and Rhône-style wines, a boutique craft beer brewery and bespoke lounge bar, a world-class restaurant, and a premium wedding and events venue that seats 160-200 people.
“We’ve created so many ‘wows’ here at Tantalus,” says Bruce.
“When you’re driving along Onetangi Road and you look up at us, you say, ‘Wow, that’s a nice-looking building’.
“As you drive up the driveway and work your way closer it becomes, ‘Wow, those are beautiful gardens’. Then you get closer and you think, ‘Wow, there are so many pretty places to look at up here’.
“Then you step inside, and it becomes, ‘Wow, the décor in here is incredible’. Then the food, wine, beer, and overall service is a whole new ‘wow’ of its own.”
Bruce and his family have poured their heart and soul into this project which has become a very profitable business in a very short time.
“We wanted to create something that really grabs customers’ attention and gives them a unique experience that they can’t have anywhere else, and we think we’ve done exactly that. We quickly established ourselves as a world-class establishment, and this has been a 10-year journey that has been hard but so incredibly rewarding.”
Ray White agent Matthew Smith, who is marketing Tantalus Estate, says the new owner’s only job will be to capitalise on the painstaking work that has already been done.
“Tantalus Estate is Waiheke’s premium wining and dining establishment, and you can see why as soon as you drive up the driveway. The business has had a record three months and bookings for summer look fantastic,” he says.
“This is a rare opportunity to acquire an existing, successful and premium vineyard, winery, brewery, restaurant, bar and events venue on Waiheke.
“There is nothing quite like Tantalus on Waiheke.”
