Showpiece dairy operation

This 99 hectare (more or less) dairy operation is located in Tauwhare - close to Hamilton. In an area renowned for quality sandy loam soils, picturesque trees and close to all services and amenities, this unit has it all.

The cow operation consists of a modern 30-aside dairy shed with ACRs, water chill, in-shed meal feeders and a 330-cow yard with great cow flow in the milking platform. Initially 330 cows were milked and in recent years this has reduced to 180-200 winter supply cows when the sheep milking operation was underway.

The 30-aside double up sheep dairy shed is a state-of-the-art showpiece. Currently milking 1,100 sheep, with in-shed meal feeding, ACRs and rapid exit from the platform. A 600 sheep yard with handling, drafting and foot bath areas are all under roof. Facilities at the sheep dairy include two toilets, shower, lunchroom/office, water chill and a 9,100 litre milk silo.

The property is well fenced with both electric and sheep-proof fencing on most of the 49 paddocks. An excellent two race system feeds out from both dairies to all paddocks. The water system incorporates a bore with submersible pump, pumping to a tank then pressure fed around the farm and to the sheds and houses. The main line is 50mm alkathene with 25mm laterals to provide good flow right around the whole property. Each dairy has its own effluent catchment system with stone traps and storage tanks before being pumped directly to the farm through underground piping and 11 hydrants, covering approximately 50 hectares. A large bladder is used to store effluent when it is too wet to apply directly to the pastures.

Around 14 hectares of chicory have been grown on farm mainly for the supplementary feed of the milking sheep. Last season 20 hectares of grain maize was also grown with a yield of 365T dry matter.

Support buildings include a 13m x 9m gable shed for calves and machinery storage, 20m x 9m lean-to shed for calves/lambs/storage and a double Skyline garage as a workshop and storage. All sheds have power.

The property is well serviced with housing and staff accommodation. The main home has four bedrooms, master ensuite is built on concrete slab, has tinted double glazed aluminium windows and flyscreens, open plan living, dining, and kitchen with an internal access double garage. The second home has four bedrooms, walk-in robe, open plan kitchen, dining and living plus second lounge, rumpus room and a double garage and carport. Adjacent to the dwelling is a modern new self-contained single person unit. The third dwelling is located at the rear of the farm, has three bedrooms, open plan living, heat pump, new kitchen, carpet and paint.
