Today’s retirees appreciate great style and design and, after almost three decades in the business of building and operating premium retirement villages, Metlifecare takes a unique approach to creating its bespoke villages and amenities.
Each village is designed to fit perfectly into the local environment and community, and the process starts by considering potential customers and determining their needs and expectations.
“We know our future residents are accustomed to high-end architecture, they appreciate outstanding urban design, and they want to be proud to show their children and grandchildren where they live,” says head of development, Matt Wickham.
“We look for outstanding sites with strong links to the local community and desirable lifestyle features and use award-winning architects and landscape designers to create bespoke villages that residents can be proud of.”

Those sites can be coastal, urban or rural, and each Metlifecare village is completely unique, with its own individual theme. One of the company’s latest developments, currently under way in Clevedon, will have a food, and arts and crafts focus, which is reflected in its design. It’s due to open in 2023.
Metlifecare has considered the area’s rich history, taking great care to honour it, building a premium retirement village with independent villas and apartments, a care home, and stylish, state-of-the art amenities, sitting comfortably within its stunning rural location.
Acquiring sites in the best locations in New Zealand is a key focus for Metlifecare. It recently announced plans for a new site in Havelock North - its first village in the Hawkes Bay region. With the village expected to open in 2025, the theme is set around wine, arts and adventure. Cutting-edge amenities will include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and beautifully landscaped village green.
A much-anticipated new development at Edgewater village in East Auckland is due for completion in February, providing residents of the well-established village with a fabulous new community centre.
“The architects, Peddlethorp, have done a wonderful job of designing a modern contemporary building, with a premium care home, amenity spaces and independent living apartments all on-site,” says head of acquisitions, Dylan Pell.
Peddlethorp also designed the second stage of Pohutukawa Landing, a Metlifecare retirement village in the coastal suburb of Beachlands, which welcomed its first residents in May.
Once the village is complete, a pohutukawa tree-lined boulevard will connect residents to ‘The Anchorage’, a central, modern building with all the amenities for high-end retirement living, including a bar and bistro-style cafe, a heated swimming pool and spa, a library, billiards room and beauty salon.
Metlifecare’s design philosophy is to build bespoke villages that reflect the land and community around which they’re built. Fitting perfectly into its coastal surroundings, Pohutukawa Landing epitomises this ethos.
