The current owners of 6 Arney Road, situated at the top of one of Remuera’s most prestigious streets, were told that their home began life as a small, brick 1930s bungalow, tucked away at the rear of a large section and reached via a long driveway lined with rose bushes.

The home, on the market listed for auction on July 6, is now a large five-bedroom, four-bathroom home with a CV of $7.4 million.

“We know that in the early 2000s it was redesigned by Sumich Chaplin Architects with a T-shaped extension that increased the floor area considerably,” one of the owners says. “They cladded the original house to match the extension – and to integrate it.”

When she and her husband purchased the property, six years ago for $6.3m, it was pleasant but quite ‘beige’ in tone, so they set about freshening up the interior, beginning with a new kitchen.

“We blasted the dark wood joinery white and replaced the granite benchtops with ocean grey marble from Artedomus,” she says. “We also changed out most of the Fisher and Paykel appliances with Gaggenau ones and swapped the beige tiles on the ground floor for oak floorboards.”

Over their time in residence, the owners have painted inside and out – a couple of times, and last year they re-modelled three bathrooms.

“That was a very major job, and we were held up by Covid-19 lockdowns along the way, but we are very pleased with the results.”

She says that they’ve found 6 Arney Road to be the perfect family home.

The pool has understandably been very popular with their children and the house itself functions very well with the bedrooms all on level two – including two master suites – plus extensive open-plan living on the ground floor, opening to three sunny patios.

Outdoors, the couple have been committed to preserving the big oak tree at the front of the property.

“It’s had quite a lot of surgery to save it,” she says. “What I really enjoy about the garden is the fact that it feels like part of the house and that’s why I chose the banana leaf patterned curtains in the living area.”

Being environmentally conscious, the family has also installed solar panels on the roof and say that it feels good being able to generate some of their own power. Having lived in a lot of places the owner thinks that she has liked this one the most as it’s quiet and private yet enjoys so many amenities right on the doorstep.

She says that the property is slightly closer to Newmarket, home to the glitzy Westfield 277, than to Remuera Village but both are a very easy stroll away.

“There are so many good schools in the neighbourhood too and our children were able to walk to theirs.”

The couple and their children are leaving to pursue a new opportunity elsewhere and Simon Siddells from Ray White, Remuera, says that the home is already attracting significant interest.

“The floor plan is great, especially on the ground where you have a fantastic sort of gallery layout, plus a home office. Having two master suites is another attraction, especially for purchasers with extended family.”

Siddells and colleague Thomas Farmer are marketing 6 Arney Road in Remuera to be sold at auction on July 6.
