Owen and Angie couldn’t believe their luck when they discovered 73 Hadfield Street, in Auckland’s Beach Haven, a year ago.

The couple thought the design by Ray van Wayenburg, from Modern Design Limited, “was very elegant”.

“We loved the fact that it’s adjacent to a wonderful reserve and can’t be built out, so the outlook is preserved forever,” Owen tells OneRoof.

The split-level home, with a 2021 CV of $1.575 million, is built with concrete and has a zen-like aesthetic inspired by the designer’s love of Japanese culture. It almost seems to float above the lush bush surrounding it, thanks to a huge, cantilevered deck.

Large windows maximise the harbour and bush views and allow sunlight to pour into the large airy living spaces, within which the black and steel kitchen is the heart. It’s sleek and modern with stylish panels and louvres. An island with a magnificent timber benchtop acts as a magnet to family and friends.

“The concrete floors are heated, and the windows are double-glazed so the whole area is always warm, and we don’t even need to close the curtains,” says Owen.

The master bedroom suite is also on the upper level, complete with walk-in robe and a cool, contemporary bathroom. Indoor/outdoor flow is seamless, via doors to the deck, and the family spent a great deal of time outdoors over summer, basking in the subtropical garden, which is bursting with palms and exotic plants, including brightly coloured bromeliads.

The home seems to float above the lush bush surrounding it, and there's a view of the sea upstairs.

“Our son really enjoys exploring in the bush and catching eels and there are always tuis and wood pigeons flying around,” says Owen.

Downstairs are two further bedrooms – plus a bathroom and separate laundry – and another deck, as well as double garaging.

The décor throughout is incredibly simple and smart, with standout features, including Japanese shoji screens and a dramatic gas fire for winter warmth, although it’s barely needed.

Owen, Angie and their son are very sad to be leaving their dream home in its idyllic surroundings, but a change in family circumstances sees them moving away from the Shore.

“We’ve been so happy here and made great friends with the neighbours. It feels as if you’re worlds away from anywhere, yet there’s a little shop just five minutes down the road and it’s an easy walk to the school bus,” he says.

A huge, cantilevered deck is a favourite place to bask in the subtropical garden.

“We can see the sea and decide when it’s the right time to take our kayaks out – it’s a great lifestyle place. If we could pick the whole property up, and take it with us, we absolutely would!”

73 Hadfield Street is on the market for sale by way of auction on July 28.

Listing agent Tanya Kwasza, from Ray White, says this very special home is lovely to be in, with its calm and peaceful vibe, which is good for the soul.

“You’re always warm and always comfortable, whether you’re chatting with friends in the living room – or entertaining alfresco outside, and it’s easy to just sit for hours, simply staring out to sea,” she says.
