The owners of 39 Fern Glen Road South, in St Heliers, know a thing or two about houses. Having lived in over 15 in various countries over the years, they knew precisely what they wanted when they decided to build the home of their dreams four years ago. All that was needed was the perfect land to build on.
“When we viewed the site for the first time, it was ideal. It was on an incline, allowing the most amazing views over Dingle Dell Reserve and the water. It was incredibly private and uninterrupted,” explains the owner.
With the property in their possession, the couple advanced their plans to build a home that would embody a classic, Hamptons-style design.
Taking inspiration from the home featured in the Jack Nicholson movie, Something’s Gotta Give, and with the help of architect John Durkin, the owners realised their ideal home.

“We had a very clear idea about what we wanted, a kind of cross between a Hamptons home and a classic New Zealand villa. We wanted plenty of wooden details and workmanship with classic fittings and fixtures throughout.
“The builders absolutely loved the build because of all the woodwork involved,” says the owner.
39 Fern Glen Road South in St Heliers, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on March 27. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom property has a 2021 RV of $5.6 million.
Certainly, the home is a masterclass in workmanship-custom cabinetry, cornices and architraves form a home that has evidently been built with the highest quality and attention to detail.
An additional part of the brief was to create an almost apartment style living for the couple, with one floor equipped with everything they need, with guests living on a separate level.
The top floor incorporates a flawless and generous shaker style kitchen and scullery, dining and living space featuring a high-beamed ceiling, white walls and shuttered windows.
The home’s three bathrooms include Perrin & Rowe tapware and a continuation of the custom shaker cabinetry in the kitchen. Covered decks extend from both floors, taking in the remarkable views.
“We look out to just green and blue; we couldn’t have a better position. We’re minutes from the sea and the village, it has worked beautifully for our lifestyle,” the owner highlights.
The couple invested in the landscaping as much as the home, and it’s evident. Enlisting landscape designer Aaron Bell-Booth, they created a tiered garden of manicured hedges and limestone paths, producing a striking result, uniform with the home.
Barfoot & Thompson agent Paul Neshausen is marketing the property, to be sold at auction.
He adds, “I don’t think I’ve seen a better quality build in my years in real estate. It’s a house you just stare at, it’s presented so beautifully. It’s the sort of a home that would win a building award. Perched high, with incredible views together with its sense of flow – you don’t see homes of this calibre often.”
