A plot of land in wealthy Acacia Bay in Taupō has quickly gone unconditional after it was given a $70,000 price tag.
Bayleys agent Sam McCaskie said there had been a flurry of interest in the 846sqm leasehold section in the gated Parawera community, which overlooks Lake Taupō, following a news report on OneRoof.
The buyers will have access to already completed community amenities, including a tennis court, heated indoor swimming pool, sauna and gym and a BBQ/entertainment space.
McCaskie said interest had come from Auckland and Hawke’s Bay but in the end the winning offer was made by a local buyer.

The interest generated was such that another section she had on the market, 52 Parawera Drive, listed with a $90,000 price tag, has also gone under contract, again to local buyers.

The leasehold arrangement had been a sticking point for some but McCaskie told OneRoof the affordable section prices were the drawcard, and the leasehold did not run out until 2083.
The land is owned by the Hiruharama Ponui Incorporation and the previous OneRoof article told how the development had had a chequered history.
According to a news report by Stuff, the Māori incorporation leased the land in the mid-2000s for 80 years to Symphony Properties to build a three-stage development.
Nine buyers paid up to $1 million each in 2006 for 14 sections but only one was built. The owners reached an out-of-court financial settlement with the developer, which was placed in receivership in 2010.
In 2022, the development had moved on and the first of 15 two-bedroom units designed by retired British architect David Duggan were listed for sale at $450,000.
Duggan, who was involved in the building of Canary Wharf Tower in London and a palace in the Middle East, told OneRoof at the time that the homes were “quite spacious and well-designed”, with “easy flow in and out”.
McCaskie told OneRoof on Friday there were building design guidelines and plans have to be submitted to the design committee for approval prior to lots being cleared.
“There are restrictions on how much bush you’re allowed to remove. You’ve got to keep a bit around the perimeter, and you’ve got to try and keep as many natives as possible, and you’ve got to try and get rid of the acacia because the acacia is quite bad out there so you’ve got to get rid of the acacia on your property.”
She thinks part of the appeal of the area is the peace and quiet, greenery and bird life, and the access to the facilities.
“It’s got your gym, your sauna. You’ve even got an area you can hire for events if you need to, (there’s) a pool, and it’s gated so it’s quite secure.”
A lot of people who inquired were eager to know more about the nature of the lease, and McCaskie said depending on the terms of leases and people’s individual circumstances, they need not be scared.
