The picture book home at 19 Cleveland Road in Parnell is just as charming on the inside as its exterior.

The archetypal villa provides all the traditional detail you’d expect, with some wonderful revelations along the way. Its details and flawless location in the best part of Auckland’s Parnell is what drew the owner to Auckland in the first place and what has happily kept her here for over 20 years.

19 Cleveland Road in Parnell, Auckland, is on the market and will be sold at auction on November 23. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a single garage has a 2021 RV of $2.75 million. According to OneRoof data, the property last changed hands in 2003 for $1.2m.

Listing agent Rachel Berry, of Ray White Mt Eden, says, “It has a charm and warm appeal, with an architecturally designed kitchen and bathrooms. It’s light-filled, with everything at a stone’s throw away. It’s the kind of property people wait for to come on the market.”

When the owner bought the property, it needed little to be done. The hard part had been completed by the previous owner, who had restored the home back from a function of four flats into a fully fledged home again.

Luckily, throughout it all, the home held all of its original features, namely panelled and high stud ceilings, original fireplaces, and native timber floors. Though after a number of years, as happens, the home needed an update. That update would be undertaken with the help of architect Briar Green.

“I had seen much of her work and loved it. She has a great flair and introduced a quirky character that I liked, but we didn’t want to steer too far from the beautiful villa style the home had,” explains the owner.

The new kitchen and bathrooms introduced a streamlined mid-century tone that shares the home with traditional features successfully. A lightly hued backdrop punctuated with traditional details have provided the perfect canvas for the owner’s eclectic art and objects, collected throughout her time overseas – four years living in Paris and 10 in India.

The owner had never lived in Auckland before, but once she viewed the delightful home, the decision was made.

“It has the perfect layout for me and the children, I could be teaching in one room and the kids each in another room, it’s always provided good separation when it’s needed.”

When it comes to the common areas, like the kitchen and dining space, you’ll find a liberal and light-filled area which leads out onto the back garden.

Populated with magnolia, lavender, hydrangeas, forget me nots and a vegetable garden mixed in an unpredictable arrangement, it’s exactly as intended, vibrant and unstructured.

“The back garden is just such a surprise, it’s bliss, a quiet little oasis you don’t expect to be there,” describes the owner.

Three generous bedrooms are on the first floor, along with a veranda providing views of the Sky Tower and the Auckland Museum. The double grammar-zoned property is within quick reach to Rosie Café, Parnell Rose Gardens and further along to Britomart and the city centre.
