While many applaud the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their desire to become “financially independent”, others have called the pair “spoiled brats” for abandoning their posts in favour of personal freedom.

Classic millennials. Giving up the family allowance and moving out of home. Someone hide the avocado and call the mortgage advisor.

The logistics of how they’ll fund their new lifestyle has got our imaginations flaring, as their hip pockets are anticipated to take a large hit. Here are some ideas for how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can foot the bill when they flee the nest.

1. Live the share house life

The couple plans to split their time between England and North America with their baby son, Archie, and will remain at the recently renovated Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

Most of the property’s renovations were technically funded by UK taxpayers – at least £2.4 million on structural work came from the Sovereign Grant, while the interiors were funded by the couple themselves – so perhaps the Sussexes could entertain the idea of taking on some British boarders?

Formerly five separate apartments, the 1801-built cottage is now a 10-bedroom residence, surrounded by 33 acres of private gardens next to Windsor Castle. Plenty of opportunity to subsidise their living costs.

Imagine the keggers. Beer pong at 10 paces.

2. Short-stay holiday rentals

If sharing with others doesn’t appeal, perhaps they could lease out the cottage to holidaymakers seeking an R&R experience – rich and royal?

Why stay at a good old bed-and-breakfast when you can live like a king for the day? We think it’ll catch on.

3. A royal reception (venue)

Harry and Meghan hosted an evening wedding reception at the 17th century Frogmore House, which is on the same estate as the cottage. The grand residence was also the backdrop for their official engagement photos. So this could be another way to kickstart the cash flow.
