Barfoot & Thompson Commercial has expanded its specialist services with the on-boarding of a new corporate retail team.
It says the team, composed of four seasoned professionals, promises to enhance the company’s capabilities in the tenant-led leasing sector, bringing a wealth of industry experience and robust commercial connections to the fore.
The retail segment of the commercial market is distinct in its demands, requiring an in-depth understanding of consumer behaviour, market trends and the specific requirements of retailers.
Success in this sector relies on the ability to anticipate and respond to the evolving needs of tenants, while cultivating enduring relationships with both national and local brands.

“Our new team is well-equipped to meet these challenges,” says Barfoot & Thompson’s Commercial Manager, John Urlich “with purpose and drive, an enviable skillset and a strong strategic vision”.
Leading the team is Paul Halliday, who has come across from Stride Property, and has held significant roles with The Warehouse Group and Savills.
His experience in leasing for Stride’s malls across New Zealand and his expansive professional network has him perfectly placed to power his colleagues forward.
“Strong retailer relationships will allow us to evolve Barfoot & Thompson’s reach in the retail sector. Led by our tenants’ requirements, we can not only provide exceptional results for our existing landlords but also compete nationally,” Halliday says.
Joining Halliday are industry veterans Stephen Chung, Sean Seeto, and James Bardebes.
Stephen Chung has a long-standing presence in the industry, having run his own retail consultancy business, Site Retail, with clients such as Kathmandu and Noel Leeming.
He worked directly for The Warehouse Group before joining RCG Group, bringing a wealth of contacts and a national focus.
Sean Seeto comes to Barfoot & Thompson with a strong background in retail, having worked for JLL and represented both ASB and ANZ, overseeing leasing, divestments and acquisitions. He is a proven performer within the sector, boasting a solid technical background.
James Bardebes, considered commercial agency royalty due to his father John’s reputation as an agent and investor, has spent the past seven years successfully working in the big box sector. His rich heritage and experience add significant value to the team.
“This strategic expansion highlights our commitment to drive growth and provide unparalleled expertise in commercial real estate,” says Urlich.
“Clients can expect the same high level of service and dedication that Barfoot & Thompson is known for, but now with enhanced capabilities in retail leasing. We’re excited for what the future holds.”
