Finding the perfect section in Muriwai – 18 years ago – was just the first step in the evolution of this sensational seaside hideaway, about 45 minutes’ drive from Auckland’s CBD – traffic permitting, yet an absolute world away in terms of peace and privacy.
“We really loved this site, which is part of a six-house subdivision set along a ridge overlooking the sea,” says one of the owners. “It’s situated well away from the road – and a perfect distance from the beach.”
The 1501sqm, level piece of land initially featured only flax bushes and a single cabbage tree.
“We used to bring a picnic and sit under it, while we made plans for our new home.”

Starting small and simple, the couple built a modern two-bedroom dwelling with high ceilings and huge windows to maximise their stunning 180-degree views.
In 2018, they added an extension that included a huge multi-purpose room, currently configured as an office at one end and a media room at the other.
“The idea is that you could easily turn that space into two bedrooms, giving you a total of four,” says the owner.

The now substantial 174sqm house also features a large entertainer’s kitchen, complete with scullery, two bathrooms including the elegant, tiled ensuite, and lots of lovely living and entertainment spaces – both indoors and out, where extensive decking surrounds a much-admired, infinity-style heated swimming pool.
The décor throughout is uncomplicated, yet chic, with a light, fun touch.
Having gazed across the ever-changing Tasman for so long, the owners have been spending an increasing amount of time on the other side lately and are considering buying an Australian property.
Letting go of their Oaia Road home won’t be easy though, because it’s been perfect for everyday life, as well as for weekends and holidays, hosting friends and family from around the world.
Muriwai is a happy, tight-knit community and locals enjoy a dog-friendly neighbourhood, horse-trekking, golf and water sports – including fishing and paragliding, along with a thriving arts and crafts scene and a well-known gannet colony.

Simon Spiller, of Bayleys, Kumeu, knows the Muriwai area like the back of his hand, having lived there for 30 years, and notes that the property is enjoying significant interest – much of which is coming from locals – impressed by its flexible functionality, and the fact it’s so easy to lock up and leave.
“The house itself strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and sophistication and people are also attracted by the underfloor heating and double-glazing, which was recently installed,” he says.
“In winter it feels like a cosy safe cocoon – especially when it’s stormy outside.”
He says that the easy-care landscaping, lovingly developed by the owners, is another attraction.
“It looks great but doesn’t require too much upkeep.”
