During almost 20 years in residence at their smart, executive home in Mission Bay, owners Jacqui and Dave have literally only had to re-stain the cedar exterior, re-carpet inside, and tile and plaster the swimming pool.
With those relatively minor jobs out of the way, everything else has barely aged at all and in fact, presents as practically new – thanks to an inspired design by Nick Stevens and Gary Lawson of Stevens Lawson Architects who were just starting out, in the early 2000s, and relished the chance to work on such a special home.
“Our brief to them was to create something which wouldn’t date; where we could simply put our feet up and not leave. And they delivered,” laughs Jacqui.
Having originally bought the section with an old stucco home, which they planned to renovate, she and Dave are very grateful that they decided to change course after renting it out and living in Australia for several years.

“We’ve ended up having such a happy time here as a family and it was a wonderful place for our children to grow up,” she says.

The 1290sqm section is long and narrow and the large 487sqm dwelling is cleverly situated to the rear, allowing plenty of outdoor lounging space, as well as lots of lawn for children and pets to enjoy.
Its layout begins with an enormous garage on the ground floor and a statement foyer, with stairs to the next level. Here is where everyday living happens, with a giant open-plan eat-in kitchen, a slightly more formal dining space and living room, all with hardwood floors.
A separate office, media room, and a large family room, plus a separate laundry and access to an extensive patio with outdoor fireplace, and of course, the swimming pool, combine to make this an ultra-spacious and versatile zone for everybody in the household. Vast sliders open the back of the house right up in order to take in maximum sun.
Two bedrooms with ensuites on the next level have fabulous harbour views, while two more share the primary bathroom.
Every single part of this remarkable house exudes spaciousness and Jacqui says that’s one of the aspects she and Dave have loved the most.

The couple have loads of family members and friends living in the bays, so they aren’t planning to move very far, instead simply seeking a smaller home on a smaller section, as close as possible to their current neighbourhood.
“Our children have all left the nest, but we really hope that this house has inspired them with an appreciation for good architecture and design,” says Jacqui.
Listing agent Peter Cleave, of Unlimited Potential, who is marketing 9 Bongard Road with Myles Cleave, says that such a beautifully built home, on the market for the first time is “a rare beast in the bays”.
“It would be perfect for somebody who’s looking to build but can’t bear going through the pain. You could potentially upgrade the kitchen and bathrooms if you wanted to, maybe later, but overall, this place has really stood the test of time.”
