Built in the early 1920s as part of then-new development nestled around Mount St John, this classic, elevated 300sqm bungalow on 1717sqm didn’t need any significant structural work when current owners Nicholas and Catherine moved in with their young family, in 2010.
“It just needed ‘doing up’ and that’s what we’ve done over the years, very gradually and carefully,” says Catherine.
“We’ve always been very strong on continuity because we believe that the house – with its original craftsmanship – has a life of its own and we wanted to respect and celebrate that.”
Nicholas explains that every single change they’ve made, both indoors and out, has been carefully considered, and on a practical level a great deal of value has been added.

“We’ve put insulation into the walls and ceilings as well as re-wiring and replumbing the house and installed a new driveway – plus the roof has recently been sealed.”
The couple have also replaced the salt-water pool’s liner and the surrounding paving and repainted the home’s exterior, but by no means was all of their time in residence spent doing work on the property.
“Simply living here has been lovely,” says Catherine.

The huge rumpus space on the ground floor of the two-storey house is perfect for teenagers.
As well as being zoned double grammar, ANI and Cornwall Park School, the home is also close to top private schools, including St Cuthbert’s, which is practically on the doorstep.
The two-storey home has one bedroom on the ground floor and three upstairs, including the master, which has its own sunroom. There are two stylish modern bathrooms, and the kitchen has recently been updated. It’s cool and contemporary, yet sits well within the era of the home, and won’t date for decades.
In keeping with their philosophy of continuity, three period fireplaces, original light fittings, leadlight windows, beautiful wooden panelling and built-in shelving and cupboards have been lovingly restored and retained.
“We’ve had lots of happy parties and other celebrations here, in the family living area and the formal living room, and when the children were teenagers the huge rumpus space on the ground floor was perfect, but there are also many quiet spots where you can simply sit and be reflective,” says Catherine.
Being up a quiet driveway means that traffic noise is never a problem, and Nicholas says that the neighbourhood is very pleasant, with Elizabeth Knox Home directly across the street and Remuera Village is just a short drive away.

Nicholas and Catherine are now downsizers, looking to live life on a smaller scale.
“It’s time to move on but we’ll certainly never find anything that compares with this in terms of character, the fact that we’re literally sitting on the slopes of the maunga – and the great views to One Tree Hill,” says Nicholas.
Sean McCaig-Megson, of Ray White, says she is excited to be marketing such a special home, alongside her colleague, Allen Sun.
“It’s a timeless classic – well-loved and treasured, ready for new owners to simply move in and enjoy. With its superb location, exceptional craftsmanship, and warm, welcoming atmosphere, we feel sure this home is a true standout.”
