In the heart of Herne Bay’s shops is FishSmith, a busy and raved-about traditional fish’n chip shop.
While many businesses in this industry have had a tough couple of years, FishSmith was quite the opposite, with the 2022 financial year recording record sales. With numerous beaches and parks nearby, people come from far and wide to enjoy some of the best takeaways.
The shop itself has been around for more than 50 years, with the current owner giving it a rebrand and new fit-out in 2014.
Current owner Scott Brown took a carefully thought-out approach when rebranding, emphasising solid systems, food costings and a fully integrated website and ordering system.

ABC Business Sales' Jeff Wiley, who is marketing FishSmith, says: “This is the slickest fish’n chips shop I have come across with its documented systems, procedures and recipes. It’s appealing to a wide range of buyers.”
A small shop frontage only tells part of the story. The operation is backed up by two extensive preparation and storage rooms at the back. This allows the shop to produce high volumes.
Above the business is a two-bedroom apartment currently used as a staff room and office. A working owner or couple could easily live upstairs and save approximately $30,000 a year on renting elsewhere.
“I opened FishSmith in 2014 after a career as a fine-dining chef. My goal was to offer the freshest fish, fries and salads I could to the wider public. Also, to offer more modern options than a traditional fish’n chips menu usually provides, like fish tacos, fresh oysters in season, and our own house-made sauces, salads, and dressings.
“It is about making the right choices, not giving people hundreds of choices. Where we can use recycled or compostable packaging, and all of our ingredients are sourced locally from people we trust,” says Brown.
After owning FishSmith for eight years, Brown has decided it is time for a change. He feels the business is now in its strongest position and it’s the perfect time for a new owner to take the reins.
