Owners Chris and Amber moved into their classic property near Ponsonby Road nine years ago, when their first daughter was a baby – and it’s the only home their second daughter has ever known.

The house at 49 Anglesea Street in Freemans Bay, Auckland, which had been majorly renovated prior to them purchasing it, is indeed a classic villa – but with a plethora of modern touches. A further renovation last year proved that a perfect home can be made yet more perfect, according to Amber.

49 Anglesea Street in Freemans Bay is on the market for sale by auction on September 23. It has an RV of $2.9 million and, according to OneRoof data, last changed hands in 2013 for $1.65m.

Blair Watson of Kellands, Freemans Bay, is marketing the property with Phillip Haeder.

“The owners have left you with absolutely nothing to do but move in and enjoy this immaculate property,” says Watson, who adds that 49 Anglesea Street is generating a great deal of interest as a high-quality home in a desirable location.

Amber, who says she has flatted in almost every street in Ponsonby, says she never believed she would one day own her own villa in the area.

Of the house renovation, she says, “We re-did the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, put a new roof on, widened the driveway, added a spa and repainted inside.

“The carpet was ripped up and we polished the floors and we also replaced what had been glass balustrades on the internal stairway with posts painted in a lovely deep red, which just seemed to suit the house better.”

Amber says that she and Chris are big fans of colour. “I don’t mean that we use it for its own sake, but after living here for a few years, we understood the house well, and knew what would be appropriate.”

The resulting green kitchen – adjacent to the open plan living and dining area, really stands out, as do the brightly painted bedrooms, two of which open onto a sunny, east-facing covered veranda.

Other attractions are the separate laundry and scullery and of course, the great outdoors where Chris and Amber’s daughters have enjoyed splashing in the pool with their friends and climbing up to the treehouse, which is grandly named Falconhurst.

There’s plenty of flat lawn space – something that’s often in short supply in this popular neighbourhood. The house in general, and especially the outside areas, is perfect for entertaining family and friends for a barbecue or celebratory dinner and when cooking feels like a hassle, there are always the many cafes and restaurants of lively Ponsonby Road to explore.

Bustling Karangahape Road is also easy to access, by foot, and the CBD is a quick bus or cycle ride away.

Now that all the hard work’s been done Chris, in particular, has itchy feet so the family is moving to another, nearby, property, with extra room for the girls and a more lock-up-and-leave aspect, which will allow the family freedom to spend more time on their boat.

“It just feels like the right time for a change,” says Amber who admits that she’s a little sad to be leaving and will especially miss the high ceilings and light-filled spaces. “It’s been the most perfect family home.”
