This elegant and multi-faceted semi-rural estate boasts a plethora of useful features and dwellings – including a slightly famous designer barn which featured in Kiwi TV show The Brokenwood Mysteries.
Close to Kumeu township, this one-hectare retreat offers a single-level European-style main home, a sprawling barn with living accommodation, a lavishly decorated one-bedroom cottage and massive free-standing shed for storage or business purposes.
Owner Andy says: “We bought here in 2015, impressed by the property and all its possibilities.”
They added the large inground mineral swimming pool for family and the massive freestanding shed from where Andy ran a concreting business and then kept collectible cars.

“One of our granddaughters got married here with 65 guests in the barn, which is a pretty special place. Brokenwood Mysteries has been filmed here twice. They hired the barn off us as a location for an episode that’s already screened, although I’ve got no idea who got murdered that time.”
This diverse estate is walking distance from Kumeu’s shops, eateries, businesses and monthly farmers’ market. Auckland CBD is about 25 minutes away off-peak.
An electronic driveway gate secures the dwellings, set well back from the road.
“It’s always been a beautiful, private and serene place to come home to, park-like with some magnificent mature trees. The main home has a strong European flair, with its single-level rendered brick exterior and concrete tile roof.”
It’s low maintenance, with double-glazed aluminium joinery, an internal double garage and decorative vines framing its front entrance.
The beautifully decorated living-dining-entertainers’ kitchen-scullery can have the adjoining family room opened to bolster this space even more.
One son enjoys decorating and has used luxurious imported House of Hackney wallpaper, which graces several rooms. A playfully exuberant floral design features in the ensuite off the master, opening to its own patio and a walk-in wardrobe.
An office and laundry complete the east wing. A wine cellar and powder room connect the west wing which boasts another sitting room, impressive bathroom and two more generous bedrooms.
The central living areas open to a north-facing courtyard with an adjustable louvred roof. Beyond that is a rustic, covered outdoor entertaining area, complete with a pizza oven, sink, fridge and workbench. The glistening inground pool and a spa pool are nearby.
One son and his family have been staying in the spacious two-storey barn with dark exterior and French country-style interior. It’s kitchen-living-dining neighbours a bathroom, big recreation room and double garage. Upstairs two bedrooms, another bathroom and open-plan living spread out under peaked ceilings.
The rich décor in the separate cottage was featured in House & Garden magazine recently. Artfully-combined colours and House of Hackney wallpaper adorn its bedroom and bathroom, blending the living and kitchen area. A covered porch and large deck complete this quaint cottage.
The massive shed with mezzanine floor and four-tonne double post electric hoist offers diverse possibilities, from housing classic cars to running a business. The house and barn are backed-up by a 14KVA generator if the power fails.
The fully fenced property has its own council certified bore and a selection of fruit trees, including an avocado tree which typically crops about 300 fruit a year.
Now one son and his family are building a home and the other is returning to London, Andy will downsize.
Bayleys Angela Rudling says: “This is an extremely impressive property, a complete private rural estate that can cater for up to three generations or a business or both.”
