A modest Auckland house which attracted scores of eager buyers during the first weekend of open homes post-lockdown sold at auction yesterday for $1.6 million, after three pre-auction offers were turned down.

The three-bedroom 1940s brick home at 34 Trafalgar Street, in Onehunga, attracted an impressive 31 registered bidders - 10 of which fought it out to be the eventual owner.

The house, which has a 2017 council valuation of $1.275 million, was marketed for sale by Ray White agents Martin Honey and Ben Bibby.

Honey told OneRoof that interest in the property was phenomenal, with attendance levels at the open homes and the auction itself the highest he'd seen in his 30 years of working in real estate.

A video taken outside the property at its first open home earlier this month showed a queue of people snaking along the road waiting to inspect it.

Honey and his team had 112 groups of people view the property since it was put on the market. He said low interest rates and the solid construction of the property itself drove interest.

“The interest rates are the lowest they’ve ever been, and the house was a deceased estate, so people knew it would have to be sold on the night,” Honey said.

Ray White auctioneer John Bowring, who sold four out of the six properties on the docket yesterday, said the sale of 34 Trafalgar Street well above the CV was an amazing result.

He said there had been a lot of interest in Auckland for well-built homes and apartments. “I don’t do many apartments, but they seem to be firing away because there’s a lack of stock in the city,” he said.

The top sale price achieved at Ray White's Auckland auctions yesterday was $2.1 million for a four-bedroom home at 30 Hollywood Avenue, in Epsom.

The 809sqm property was marketed for sale by Ray white agents Rohan Thompson and James Burry.
