When Kim and Grant Lynch discovered 40 Ranui Road in Remuera, Auckland City seven years ago, they knew they’d found something special.
“Kim and I walked through this house, stood at the back of the section, both looked at each other, and said, ‘We can’t get better than this’,” Lynch recollects.
“We wanted lots of sun, lots of privacy, a flat section so we could enjoy great indoor/outdoor flow – we wanted tranquillity. And we knew we’d found it the moment we stepped into this home.”
The Lynchs have now put their home of seven years on the market for sale by auction on December 1. 40 Ranui Road in Remuera has an RV of $5.5 million, along with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, multiple living spaces, a study, new kitchen with scullery and garaging for three vehicles.

UP Real Estate agent Josh Nixon who, along with Peter Cleave, is marketing this property, says 40 Ranui Road is one of those homes that ticks all the boxes.
“And I don’t say that lightly,” Nixon laughs. “Homes like these that are completely finished, that come with such seamless flow, a pool, plenty of space for the kids outside, plenty of garaging and storage for all the toys, are in that double grammar zone … they don’t come up very often.
“This really is a special opportunity.”
Built in the 1960s, 40 Ranui Road had been remodelled about 15 years before the Lynchs moved in. Since then, the pair have overhauled the property inside and out, creating a beautiful family escape that looks like it’s stepped straight out of a magazine.
“We keep changing the way we live as people and I think this home really reflects that now,” says Lynch.
“We’ve opened up all of the living spaces to create that seamless indoor/outdoor living that we all love. We don’t have window treatments on any of those windows because we don’t need to – we have total privacy out the back of the house – which continues that feeling of being always connected with the outdoors.”
The garden holds a special place in Grant’s heart.
“I love sitting under the big eaves and looking out at the garden,” he says. “I built that garden and I’m really proud of it, and after a long week at work, a glass of wine out there in the sun is just wonderful.”
By total coincidence, the builder Grant hired to do their renovations was the same builder who had worked on the house previously.
“I didn’t make the connection until I called him, and when I told him the address he replied, ‘Oh yes, I know that place intimately’,” he laughs. “It was great to be able to continue that story.”
No detail has been missed in this total renovation. A new kitchen with scullery, bathrooms, double-glazing, three-car garaging, even more off-street parking, and a master suite that would look right at home in an inner-city hotel make this home ideal for growing families of all ages.
The use of wood adds a warmth to the home while bringing each space together. External access to the downstairs study also creates plenty of options when it comes to working or running a business from home.
Lynch says that while it’s time to move onto their next stage of life, he and Kim are leaving with very mixed emotions.
“We’ve poured a lot of time and energy into this home and it’s the end of a season for us. We’ll never have a property like this again, and we hope a new family that needs more capacity than us will love it here just as much as we have.”
