It is changing times in Onehunga’s town centre where the former Onehunga Workingmen’s Club is making way for a new kind of club that developer Tim Lamont calls “a new place to call home”.

Welcome to The Onehunga Mall Club, the 102-apartment, eight-storey development by Lamont & Co, at 158 Onehunga Mall, where the workingmen’s club’s low-slung 1950s building is a well known local landmark.

In its place on a 1808sqm site, this new addition to the Onehunga skyline will start taking shape later this year, with completion expected by the end of 2023.

Lamont & Co has adopted The O.M.C moniker for The Onehunga Mall Club that resonates with the workingmen’s club’s WMC logo.

The developers are using the typeface of the club’s original street signage in the lobby and are looking to re-purpose other club signage for use in the new building.

“This is part of its brand story and we wanted to recognise its former use as a community club,” says Tim.

Designed by Ashton Mitchell Architects with input from DPA Architect’s heritage design team, this building includes brick and precast concrete construction with a contemporary facade.

Together, they cement its place in this historical neighbourhood that includes St Peter’s Anglican Church, one of Auckland’s oldest churches, that was built in 1848.

Located at the heart of Onehunga Mall, this building takes advantage of the street’s elevation from its high point at One Tree Hill, down to the Manukau Coastal Walkway.

Additional street access off Municipal Place is the entry for 81 car parks over two levels, located behind 340sqm commercial/retail space fronting Onehunga Mall.

Set back above level 2, the six levels of one-bedroom, one-bedroom plus multi-use room and two-bedroom apartments maximise the choice of views. The 360 degree outlook includes the suburban green spaces of One Tree Hill to the north and the Manukau Harbour environs towards the south.

Tim emphasises the site’s prime location with proximity to the train station 150 metres away, the bus stop on its doorstep and the various community facilities among the local cafe and restaurant offerings.

It’s a part of Auckland that Tim and his brother Andrew have great affinity with, as the developers of their sold-out, 161-apartment Fabric of Onehunga development in Victoria Street.

“The Onehunga Mall Club is a more urban style in keeping with the character of the historic town centre with all those amenities on its doorstep,” says Tim.

Accordingly, the mix of apartments here is, he says, about 40% one-bedroom, 20% one-bedroom plus “multi-room” and about 40% two-bedroom apartments.
