The final penthouse available to buy in new Browns Bay boutique apartment development Kauri Residences is very near completion, offering breathtaking views and a stunning beachside lifestyle just 300 metres from Browns Bay beach.
Four of the five fifth-floor penthouses and all but nine apartments have already sold in this luxurious pet-friendly development of 53 residences, designed by Ponsonby-based Matz Architects for developers Aedifice Property Group at 30 Anzac Street.
Matz director Phill Matz says: “You’re really going to feel a sense of sanctuary coming home to this penthouse, which has 47 square metres of private deck stretching its entire width, delivering beautiful views.
“No other apartment can see you, including when you’re on the deck, so you really can imagine you’re in your own world, enjoying the sunny north-northwest orientation.

“With generous living-dining-kitchen space flowing out to the deck it will be a brilliant place to entertain; somewhere where you can easily invite 20 friends around for a cocktail party. Equally it’s perfect for a couple to sit out on the balcony after work, enjoying a gin and watching the sun go down.”
This penthouse priced at $2,849,000 has a 126-square metre layout, extended by the deck, which includes three-bedrooms, two bathrooms, a powder room and a separate laundry. Its price includes a storage locker and parking for two cars, utilising premium German car stacker technology.
It has ducted air-conditioning, a three-metre stud in the open-plan living, and a walk-in wardrobe for its master bedroom, which also opens to the deck.
Matz says: “This development was a high-level product for a client that was willing to really push for great architecture and design. My practice proposed concepts for both the exterior and interior design, paying homage to the developer’s intent to make these residences really special.
“For example, this penthouse comes with a cedar hot tub to relax in on its deck and a double-sided fireplace warming both inside and outside. The balcony edge is solid to 700 high, topped by glass, so it feels pleasantly private sitting on the deck but you still enjoy that higher level view out to the ocean and beyond.”
Its roofline cantilevers out over the deck somewhat with timber-lined soffits, creating a sheltered aspect and screening the interior from scorching summer sun.
The architects designed this residence’s bespoke kitchen, distinctive for its big over-bench suspended steel framed box which is LED lit and incorporates fluted glazing. High-tech Italian-designed Fenix super matte benchtops accompany Fisher and Paykel appliances including a wine fridge.
The development derives its name from the first house built in the bay on this site in 1876 for the Brown family, a long gone kauri homestead.
Matz says: “We wanted to acknowledge that here but of course you can’t clad a multi-storey building in timber because it’s not fire-rated.”
He incorporated that reference more subtly, using timber to imprint formed concrete panels which are teamed with striking black metal and bronze columns on the building’s exterior.
“I think the building infuses itself quite gently into the neighbourhood, designed to be proud but not to feel too imposing, even though it’s a relatively tall building for this neighbourhood.”
Because the building will be completed by the end of August (with settlement proposed for late September), serious buyers will be able to inspect this penthouse in person to experience it first-hand.
Listing agent Karim Garcia, of New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, says: “This last penthouse available in this boutique luxury development is notable for its high level of excellence, architectural expertise and breathtaking views.”
