The South Island’s first specialist Birkenstock store is set to open in the Christchurch CBD shortly.
Located on the corner of High and Cashel Streets in the ANZ Centre, the fit-out is about to begin and the store is set to open in late August, just in time for the spring season.
The German footwear brand has a huge international following, winning prestigious awards for its sandals.
In Auckland, it has a store in Newmarket with another recently opened in Takapuna.

Shae Borman, Head of Retail for Birkenstock’s local distributor Brittain Wynyard & Co, says they have been eyeing Christchurch for some time, waiting for the right spot.
“With over 13m of frontage, this site was perfect for Birkenstock to showcase our range and introduce new styles previously not available to Christchurch.
“The CBD is looking great, and we’re excited to become part of it. Christchurch’s climate really suits our style of footwear and we’re confident the time is right for a specialist Birkenstock store in the central city.”
Annabelle Bramwell, Retail Leasing Broker at Colliers Christchurch, says attracting the beloved brand is a huge coup for the CBD.
“There are no vacancies facing onto Cashel Street and few options available in the laneways. Demand is set to outstrip supply until we see development of the final two vacant sites in the retail precinct.”
The next new building to add to the Cashel Street landscape is local developer Richard Peebles’ complex beside Westpac, which has lured a Nike concept store and outdoor clothing brand Helly Hansen.
