When Tauranga resident Megan Savill received the congratulatory phone call from Zoe at OneRoof to tell her she’d won the third and final Suzuki Swift, Megan didn’t quite believe it, to put it mildly.
“I think I may have sworn at her and accused her of being a scammer,” she laughs. “I’m a public servant, so where I work we’re always being warned about scammers.”
Megan had only entered the You Win A Car competition a few days prior – a chance click one evening during her regular OneRoof browsing sessions.
“I’m often on there and am always keeping a keen eye on what our house is worth. The value has been plummeting, but to be fair it was far too high a year ago, so it’s just getting more in line with what it should be.”

Once she’d taken herself to a private room at work and Zoe explained that she was the real deal and the good news was in fact true, it all started to sink in.
“It’s ridiculously exciting. The next thing I did was call my husband Lance, he’s a V8 nut and loves classic cars. We’ve been going to the Beach Hop for almost 20 years,” says Megan who’s an avid competitor.

Lance took a good amount of convincing as well before accepting that Megan hadn’t been scammed.
“My mother still doesn’t believe it either,” she laughs. “The most I’ve ever won is a couple of frozen chickens in a meat pack down at the local club.”
Megan was off to pick up her brand new car the day OneRoof called her. “Aaron, who is the sales manager at Suzuki in the Mount Maunganui branch, called me to say the car has arrived.”
Selecting the perfect hue for her new 2024 Suzuki Swift GLS Hybrid Auto beforehand proved to be an unexpected and rather large challenge.

“Honestly, that was the biggest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life! I’ve never owned a brand new car before, so being able to choose the colour was so hard. I went from black, thinking it’s quite styly and sporty, to red than blue.”
It was a recce to the dealership after work one day that helped lock in her final decision.
“I went for the burnt orange – the OneRoof colour. I really loved it and it’s just a bit different. I’ve got a white 2017 Holden Trax which will be getting sold. We’re going to treat ourselves with a little holiday or something like that.”
The hard-working Welcome Bay couple got into their first home about eight years ago.
“We have a fairly hefty mortgage that we’re trying to pay off by the time we’re 65, we’re in our fifties now. We’re second-time rounders,” she explains.
“We did the whole blended family thing with five kids between us – they were all teenagers when we first got together 16 years ago.”
Before that, Megan was a single mum for a long time with two children. “I used to drive a car called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, because it used to backfire across traffic lights.”
