Dunholme, on the desirable Remuera Ridge, was built on a 10-acre rural site in the 1870s for businessman Samuel Morrin.
Although the sprawling mansion was burnt to the ground in 1949, having ended its life as a boarding house, it’s pleasing to note that the original red brick steps leading to the garden still remain.
These days however, a smart apartment complex of seven units, constructed in the 1980s, sits atop that luscious green space at 186 Remuera Road, and number six is especially desirable, according to Terry King of Remuera Register.

King, Diana King and Lisa Baillie, all of Remuera Register, are marketing the home in collaboration with Ray White Remuera.
“The current owner loved the size and the location of this special home and appointed architect Malcolm Walker to completely transform the interior, turning it in some extra-special,” says Terry King.
“The brief was to turn the dated home into the equivalent of a modern new-build apartment, and he did, but of course this offers so much more. The entire interior was gutted and carefully rebuilt with the best quality materials available.”

The views from the lounge and main bedroom sweep around the neighbourhood, drawing the eye across the leafy suburb’s rooftops towards the harbour and Rangitoto. Both rooms have access to the deck.
The bedroom is generous, with a cool, contemporary ensuite while a second bedroom at the rear of the home also has a bathroom.
While the property’s interior is extremely attractive, King believes the property’s biggest asset is its connection to the garden.

“Because of the way the neighbouring homes have been positioned, well away, you get the sense that you’re living in a beautiful park with rolling lawn and beautiful old trees.”
King says that concrete block construction and concrete floors mean no road noise.
“It’s just a little haven where you always feel comfortable and safe – it’s really peaceful,” he says.
The 156sqm home comes with a double garage but there’s a bus stop nearby and Newmarket Train Station is an easy walk so it’s easy to commute sustainably and Remuera Village is also easily accessible on foot.

“You’d easily pay $10m-$15m for one of the large, surrounding properties who share your amazing view, but this is a much, much less costly option.”
King suggests that it’s an ideal lock-up-and-leave property for Aucklanders who have a more permanent home up north or as an ideal entry-level to the suburb for buyers who’ve always aspired to live there.
