Nineteen years ago, while viewing an open home on Dromorne Road, these homeowners glimpsed a vacant section right next door.
“We said to each other if that section ever came available, we would jump in and get it,” one of the owners says.
So it was serendipitous when, a couple of months later, they came upon a for-sale sign on the same vacant section.
“It so happens that a few months later we took a shortcut up Dromorne Road and spotted the ‘for sale’ sign, so we got in there smartly and put an offer in. We had purchased it within a couple of days.”

The couple, who had been looking at homes in Remuera, had seen a number of houses designed by architecture firm Paterson, Cullen & Irwin and, liking their style, hired Brian Cullen as their architect and embarked on a journey to create their dream home.
Now, 19 years later, they have retired and are looking to downsize. 3a Dromorne Road in Remuera, Auckland is on the market, with a set date of sale closing May 26 - listed by Bayleys agent Lorraine Young. With the Remuera Bowling Club on one side, there are no immediate neighbours along the southern boundary allowing for the utmost privacy when swimming in the heated pool, surrounded by palm trees.
The two generous living spaces of the five-bedroom home wrap around the pool with an open-plan kitchen and family room on one side, and a more formal dining room and lounge on the other.
With the stunning entertainment area flowing seamlessly into the outdoor pool area made according to their specifications, it’s no surprise that it’s the owners’ favourite part of the house.
Fully ducted heating and cooling air conditioning with individual temperature control for each room and discreet bathroom extraction systems were also important parts of the puzzle for the homeowners when it came to their build.
Agent Young says the house has an extraordinary feeling of openness and space, welcoming you into the home with a beautiful ballroom-style staircase and offering generous-sized bedrooms which teenagers will appreciate.

“It also has a super king-sized master wing which includes his and hers dressing rooms and a powder room, plus an enormous ensuite,” she says. “That is an impressive feature.”
Other than its spaciousness, one of the property’s main attractions is its proximity to several local schools and Remuera village.
“It’s a level walk to Remuera School, King’s prep, and the private schools so you can avoid the gridlock,” Young says.
“I think Dromorne would have to be one of the prettiest tree-lined streets and it cuts through two arterials which are Market and Omahu roads, yet it’s quiet. It’s a beautiful area with a lovely community.”
After almost two decades in their dream home, the owners would love a big family to move into the home they built. “We’re basically retired now and looking to downsize. There are only two of us in the house now, so consequently it’s too big for us and it’s time to move on,” the owner says.
