After 20 years, Pauanui Automotive and Marine, trading as Thompson Automotive, is being sold as a going concern business.

Operating in the Coromandel Peninsula town of Pauanui, it was founded by long-time local resident, Darren Thompson and is on the market for the first time. The business is being marketed by LINK Ellerslie broker Angie Flemming

Thompson Automotive is a recognised brand entrenched in the Coromandel, servicing the Pauanui and Tairua. The owners, husband and wife Darren and Romy, have decided it is time for new owners to enjoy the many lifestyle benefits of living and working in the popular destination town.

The Thompsons operated only on Monday to Friday to enjoy their lifestyle in this pristine part of the world, says Flemming.

Pauanui, on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, is the fourth largest town in region. It is home to the Waterways residential development which brings more residents to the area, with their vehicles, boats and watercraft.

“With a global shift towards working remotely there are more and more people relocating out of the main centres to the regions,” says Flemming, adding that migration to the region has increased demand for many local businesses.

Through the year's Covid restrictions, the business has continued to provide essential services to locals.

“Servicing the community has always been the number one focus for Darren and his team,” she says.

Flemming adds: “We have found that the events of 2020 have prompted many people to really assess what’s important to them and to make life changing decisions, be it selling a business, buying a first business or returning home from years abroad.

“Like many, the owners have decided that after 20 years, now is the time for change.”

The business’ services have grown to include a full range of automotive and marine servicing and repairs as well as small machine repairs for lawn mowers, chainsaws and the like.

“With a very experienced team, there’s not much they can’t do, and that is part of living in a regional community.” Says Flemming.

Thompson Automotive employs two highly skilled, full-time local technicians full time, which means sound continuity in the business for a new owner. Local residents Darren and Romy plan to remain in the area and spend time on their family and projects.

The business has been located for 18 years in the commercial precinct at 5 Tangiteroria Lane, on the outskirts of town. It is next door to a planned boat storage facility that will provide a captive market for marine servicing for a

new owner. There is also opportunity to expand into adjacent facilities under the same roof.

She says that the business’ reputation has been built on good old-fashioned local customer service, there is the opportunity to embrace social media to reach a new audience and grow the brand throughout the area.

Flemming says: “There is potential for a new owner to capitalise on the organic growth of the Pauanui/Tairua district to build the business further, as well as the potential to introduce a mobile service and extend trading hours”.

The business, including all plant and equipment, is offered at just $250,000. Providing an excellent return to the owners, this opportunity will suit an owner operator or owner manager.

“We see this as an opportunity for a new owner to invest in a ‘sea change’ and relocate to the sought-after Coromandel Peninsular and to truly embrace what life in New Zealand has to offer” says Flemming.
