After over 20 years in operation, Pauanui Automotive and Marine - trading as Thompson Automotive - is being sold as a going concern business.
Operating in the Coromandel Peninsula town of Pauanui, it was founded by long-time local resident Darren Thompson.
“Servicing the local community has always been our number one focus and after 20 years in the business, it’s now time for us to make a change,” says Thompson.
This business is being marketed by Link Ellerslie business broker Dawn Engelbrecht.

“Currently operating Monday to Friday, the owners enjoy this lifestyle business in this pristine part of the world,” says Engelbrecht.
Thompson Automotive is a recognised brand entrenched in the Coromandel, servicing Pauanui, Tairua and surrounding areas.
Darren and Romy Thompson have decided it is time to move on and let new owners enjoy the many lifestyle benefits of living and working in the popular destination. They plan to remain in the area and spend time with their family.
Pauanui, on the eastern side of the peninsula, is one of Coromandel’s most popular tourist towns.
Thousands of Kiwis come from around the country to Pauanui with their vehicles and boats, creating additional business during peak season.
Increased residential development in the area has also seen a steady rise in the number of locals who move here for its warm weather and white sandy beaches.
“With a global shift towards working remotely, there are more and more people relocating out of the main centres,” says Engelbrecht, adding that this migration has increased demand for many local businesses.
Through the recent Covid restrictions, the business has continued to provide essential services.
“What makes this business unique is its years of establishment under one owner providing real local service. Their services have grown to include a full range of automotive and marine servicing and repairs as well as providing small engine repairs such as lawn mowers and chainsaws," says Engelbrecht. “With a very experienced team, there isn’t much they can’t do.”
With the business located on the outskirts of town there is plenty room for expansion, she says.
“There is opportunity for a new owner to significantly increase exposure through other avenues of marketing including social media.
“We have found that the events relating to this pandemic have prompted people to really assess what’s important to them and to make life-changing decisions, be it selling a business, buying a first business, or returning home from overseas.”
Thompson Automotive employs two full-time, highly skilled local technicians, which means sound continuity in the business for a new owner.
Engelbrecht says: “There is potential for a new owner to capitalise on the organic growth of the Pauanui/Tairua district to build the business further, as well as the potential to introduce a mobile service and extend trading hours."
The business, including all plant and equipment, is offered at just $250,000. Providing an excellent return to the owners, this opportunity will suit an owner-operator.
“We see this as an opportunity for a new owner to invest in a sea change and relocate to the well sought-after Coromandel Peninsula and truly embrace what life in New Zealand has to offer,” says Engelbrecht.
