East Auckland suburb Howick has long been recognised for its old-world charm mixed with a relaxed, sunny, seaside lifestyle. Now, a new development is set to enrich the community further.
Named after an iconic 100-year-old oak tree located in the heart of Howick, Oaken Residences promises to become an integral part of the local landscape. Developed by D3 Development and designed by the award-winning Leuschke Group Architects, Oaken’s 31 townhouses are now under construction.
Oaken’s design has been inspired by the old-English architecture the area is renowned for, says Leuschke director Rob Knight.
“We’ve aimed for a design that is timeless and traditional, and suited to the historic and established Howick community, while still aiming to providing variation in layouts for these high-quality, energy efficient homes,” he says.

As agreed when the site was purchased from Auckland Council in 2022, D3 is working closely with Eke Panuku to ensure Oaken meets the essential design outcomes.
“Given its central Howick Village location, it was imperative that any development on this site recognised the essential design outcomes of the Howick Village Centre Plan,” says Allan Young, Eke Panuku’s development general manager.
“This is to preserve the area’s rich history, character and cultural values, which are highly valued by the local community.”
Located on Moore Street, Oaken is centrally positioned in Howick Village. An array of cafés, restaurants, parks, entertainment options, and everyday amenities are within walking distance; the Saturday morning farmers market is an easy two-minute walk away too.

Oaken features 31 two- and three-bedroom townhouses, each with their own internal-access garage, some with private lifts. Buyers can expect a light, bright, comfortable and modern home.
Kitchens are proudly New Zealand-made, with trusted Fisher & Paykel and Bosch appliances. Bathrooms are generous and luxurious, plus there’s plenty of storage.
“Life will be very easy here,” says D3’s residential development manager Scott Illingworth.
“It’s low maintenance, a handy-to-everything location, plus because every home here is freehold and there are no expensive bodycorp fees, there’s really nothing for buyers to worry about.”
The project is being managed and constructed by D3’s sister company, C3 Construction. Construction has started on Oaken Residences and the project is on track for completion in June 2025.
“Having C3 Construction on board gives us surety on our programme and build quality as well as ensuring the building products selected are of high quality and low maintenance to safeguard the investment long term,” says Illingworth.
“We’re all on a mission to produce a high-quality development for our buyers which will stand the test of time, and that’s something we’re really proud of.”

Harcourts agent Cherie Brice, who along with Lisa Looi is marketing Oaken, says she is very proud of what she affectionately describes as “her baby”.
“Lisa and I have been working with the Oaken team since its infancy, and it’s wonderful to see the project come to life,” she says.
Cherie has lived in Howick for almost 30 years, so understands the appeal of the seaside community.
“Once you move to Howick, you never want to leave,” she says.
“Most enquiries so far have been from locals who want to downsize but who don’t want to leave the area. Oaken’s beautiful design coupled with its easy access to everything Howick offers makes this a premium housing option.”
