Inspired renovations in classic homes of yesteryear have become a true artform in city-fringe heritage suburbs such as Point Chevalier which has been swiftly growing in popularity – close to motorway links and the CBD, with easy access to similarly vibrant neighbouring suburbs like Grey Lynn and Ponsonby.
When Kendal Read, director of The Building Co, and Adele Jenner, who owns popular Catroux Café in Westmere, first saw their very centrally located home at 282 Point Chevalier Road in early 2020, they were quick to identify its potential.
All the hard work had already been done, with a rebuild taken on by a previous owner which opened the home up very cleverly.

The couple realised they’d found a lovely canvas which largely only needed decorating flair – something they both have in spades.
Read says that he’s especially pleased about the amount of kerb appeal he and Jenner have been able to add. What was previously a green exterior is now clean, bright, sparkling white, with smart black front steps.

He says that having four bedrooms (each with built-in double wardrobes) and two bathrooms in a home of this era was also very attractive and he and Jenner were able to update those parts of the house very easily.
The kitchen has been refreshed with new doors and a marble splashback and it offers plenty of bench space.
White paint has also performed its magic in the open plan living and dining zone, which opens via concertina doors to the rear of the section, which also includes a separate, spacious studio along with private, entertaining spaces set amongst lush green lawn and established landscaping.

“Our children are young and having the studio is great because it’s nice to have a quiet place to escape to, sometimes,” says Read.
Now that the project is complete, a fabulous, truly 21st century, light, bright airy home offers effortless flow – throughout the relaxing interior and there are lots of nooks and crannies for reading the paper or enjoying a coffee.
Read says that having plenty of off-street parking is very handy and adds extra outdoor play space for the couple’s daughters.

Derek von Sturmer, of Ray White, Point Chevalier, says that this particularly desirable property is already attracting plenty of interest because there still aren’t nearly enough properties in its price bracket and it’s perfectly positioned for local amenities. He is marketing the property with Jackson Tariau.
“It’s moments from the local beach and Point Chevalier Primary School is right across the road – plus it’s walking distance to Western Springs Park and Meola Dog Park – and Westfield St Lukes shopping centre is just a quick drive away,” he says.
“There is development going on in the near neighbourhood but nothing that will cause this great property to be built out.”
282 Point Chevalier Road in Pt Chevalier, Auckland will be sold at auction on March 24.
