Having grown up locally, Liz and Andrew were very keen to bring up their own children in a community-oriented suburb and Point Chevalier beach was their first pick.
“When our eldest was a baby, we would walk around putting flyers in letterboxes hoping that an elderly couple might sell us their family home,” Liz says.
They finally spotted a suitable property in Harbour View Road, and in 2000, bought what was then an old art deco-style home, just steps from the beach.
“It had been in the same family since 1937 and the son sold it to us. His parents had planted a kauri in his honour when he was born and almost 90 years later, we still cherish that very special tree – as do our tui and kereru,” Liz explains.

Seeking a modern dwelling for the new millennium, Liz and Andrew quickly embarked on what was essentially a complete rebuild, designed by Jessop Architects. The resulting layout worked so well for themselves and their two children who’ve now left home, they opted not to change it when embarking on a very significant refresh this year using builders Warren Adolph Homes.
“We engaged them the first time around and they did such a fabulous job, we knew they’d exceed our expectations again.”
Andrew’s expertise in commercial construction ensured meticulous attention to detail and material selection. The exterior cedar weatherboard cladding and Rockcote render include a cavity system, while the home’s gracious curves, faceted windows, and custom stainless steel balustrades, have all been fastidiously engineered.
29 Harbour View Road in Point Chevalier, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on November 22. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom property has a 2021 RV of $3.8 million.
Recent upgrades include a Nuraply roof, double glazed joinery and new timber panelling for a striking interior facelift. On the ground level is a huge formal lounge/media room, large dining/living room, a sensational new entertainer’s kitchen, plus an office, bedroom and family bathroom.
Then, on the first floor, are two new tiled bathrooms and three double bedrooms – all with balconies – including the master suite, which has a north easterly aspect yielding distant views of the harbour bridge and Sky Tower. The flat, sunny site features mature sub-tropical landscaping, private outdoor living, an EV-ready double garage, loads of storage and separate off-street parking for a boat.
“There’s plenty of space to add a pool too, but we never did that because our boys regarded the beach as their backyard,” Liz laughs.
In a poignant twist of fate Liz and Andrew are now living back at her own childhood home – it’s their new project. While she and Andrew are a little sad not to experience living at the ‘new’ 29 Harbour View Road, they’re incredibly proud to be presenting such a high calibre property, treasured over the past 23 years.
Listing agent Jo de Beer, of Ray White, who is marketing the property with Lawrence von Sturmer, says the freshly renovated property, on highly sought-after Harbour View Road is one of the best family homes they’ve brought to market this year.
“The high-spec construction, flawless finish and stunning design are outstanding. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy beachside luxury in one of Point Chevalier’s most-admired architectural homes.”
